Note on Wedding

Rachel Waterhouse is one of my daughter Undine’s old school friends, and when she married Gil before returning with him to Mozambique I composed this to put on a wedding card for them.  On such cards I usually quote Spenser but in this case they were lucky enough to catch me adapting Goethe.  For a more literal rendering see the translation of Goethe’s Nähe des Geliebten below.1

Note and translation by Alan Marshfield

1 Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Nähe des Geliebten                                               Closeness of the Beloved

Ich denke dein, wenn mir der Sonne Schimmer            I think of you when the sea’s surface shimmers

     Vom Meere strahlt;                                                      With sunny gleams;

Ich denke dein, wenn sich des Mondes Flimmer         And of you when the moon’s reflection glimmers

In Quellen malt.                                                            On welling streams.

Ich sehe dich, wenn auf dem fernen Wege                    I see you when dust rises in a haze

Der Staub sich hebt,                                                     On a road’s ridge,

In tiefer Nacht, wenn auf dem schmalen Stege            And in deep night when a wayfarer sways

Der Wandrer bebt.                                                        On a frail bridge.

Ich höre dich, wenn dort mit dumpfem Rauschen       I hear you when in a dull surge and fall

Die Welle steigt.                                                           The breakers roar,

Im stillen Haine geh’ ich oft zu lauschen,                    Though often in a copse the quiet’s all

Wenn alles schweigt.                                                    I wander for.

Ich ben bei dir, du seist auch noch so ferne,                I am by you; however  far you go,

Du bist mir nah!                                                           I feel you near.

Die Sonne sinkt, bald leuchten mir die Sterne.            The sun sinks, soon the stars will shine, and Oh,

O wärst du da!                                                             That you were here!

                                                                                                                               (back to note)
