GRANDMOTHER AND CHILD

As on a gilt trecento board

in a baroque academy

haloed St Anne supports the Lord,

an infant, stiff upon her knee—

these were as warmly photographed:

solemn they sit and well composed,

with heavy, yellow drapes abaft

and in celestial light enclosed.

Stunned by his own created world,

the babe’s surprise is justified;

and so (her arm about him curled)

is her unfazed, seraphic pride.
